Season guide

The best time to visit Pench for stargazing

Short answer: the cooler, clearer months from about October to March are usually best. Within any month, the week around the new moon gives the darkest sky.

Two things decide a good night: how clear the sky is, and how bright the Moon is. The season controls the first, and our Moon calendar shows the second.

By season

What each season is like

  • October to February (post-monsoon and winter). Usually the clearest skies. Orion, the Pleiades and bright winter stars rise in the evening. Nights are cold, so dress warmly. This is also the main season for the Leonid (November) and Geminid (December) meteor showers.
  • March to May (summer). Generally clear, but days are hot and haze or dust can soften the sky. Nights are more comfortable after dark. Planets and the summer Milky Way become the highlights as the season goes on.
  • June to September (monsoon). Cloud is common and sessions are often affected. Clear gaps do happen, but plan with flexibility and check with us first. Pench National Park's safari zones also usually close during the monsoon.

The weather can change from day to day, so always message us on WhatsApp before you travel.

By Moon phase

Choose your night by the Moon

  • New moon week: the darkest sky, best for the Milky Way, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies, and for astrophotography.
  • First quarter to full moon: the Moon is bright and high in the evening, ideal for seeing craters and mountains through a telescope.
  • Full moon: a beautiful night for the Moon itself, though faint objects are washed out.
